Tuning Advice:- GX160 Govenor Removal

Basic GX160 Govenor removal Instructions:

  • blank petrol pipe with a bolt in the tubing,

  • remove petrol tank by undoing the 4 bolts

  • locate the shaft that, protrudes vertically thro' the upper crankcase, and links via a spring to the carb.

  • remove this spring and the lever that is clamped around the vertical shaft located earlier.  This will allow the engine to rev higher than a governed engine.

  • follow further steps if you want to remove the parts from within the crankcase, which doesn't do much other than give you confidence that nothing is going to come loose inside.

  • drain oil

  • remove crankcase side casing bolts

  • carefully open joint taking care not to damage joint

  • locate internal governor mechanism (plastic gear and metal linkage) and vertical shaft.

  • prise the spring clip from the end of the shaft and remove the plastic gear and linkage. Also look out for the washer behind the gear difficult to see and easy to leave in!!.

  • remove d clip from vertical shaft and remove the shaft from inside the crankcase.

  • blank the hole with a suitable nut and bolt or tap it out for a blanking stud or use for fuel pump if fitting a central fuel tank system.

  • re build, re fill with oil to half way up filler holes (proving the engine is vertical.

  • re connect tank to carb and start up engine.
